We would be happy to help our younger friends with the stuff that we learned recently!

    Ariel Ganelis

I am a 10th grade student at Stanford Online High School. My interests lie in studying the Russian language, behavioral economics, and how ethical and philosophical principles can be applied to economics globally to achieve peace for nations around the world.

I started with an idea to share my interests and what I learned in school with younger students who wanted enrichment and needed help with math, reading, and other subjects. When the pandemic began in 2020, it brought out the disparities in how children from different backgrounds were affected by school closures and their lack of access to quality online learning resources. This situation exacerbated the already existing divide in educational resources, contributing to differences in future opportunities, including access to higher education and income potential, particularly for children from families with lower socioeconomic status and disadvantaged backgrounds.

I have always loved learning, and sharing my knowledge with others has been an integral part of my own educational journey with classmates and friends. Naturally, I thought I could do peer tutoring virtually over Zoom. I quickly started to receive many requests for tutoring, mainly through word of mouth, and decided to formalize the process by creating a virtual peer-to-peer tutoring and mentorship program called superWisely. The program quickly expanded nationwide, with students from different states and time zones connecting over Zoom to learn math, English, writing, science, and form mentorship connections.

While managing the matching of students and volunteers, I noticed numerous requests from immigrant families seeking peer tutors who shared their background or spoke their native language. Parents and students shared stories of their families’ heritage and rich cultural backgrounds. With waves of immigration coming from Ukraine, Russia, Afghanistan, Central and South America, and Asia, I was inspired to create a space for students to share their own or their families’ rich stories of cultural heritage and journeys.

The mission of the superWisely Journal is to advance cultural education and appreciation while promoting cultural understanding and eliminating prejudice in student communities worldwide. Every student’s artistic expression of individual cultural backgrounds and heritage is celebrated in the superWisely Journal.
